Okay, so there's no map. And your life isn't in danger. But one thing that could be, judging by the latest Netflix-related headlines, is conventional storytelling. The online streaming service and content producer is reportedly working on making "choose your own ending" programmes, incorporating technology that will allow viewers to pick from multiple conflicting story threads.

"We're doing work on branch narratives so you are actually making choices as you watch," an alleged insider told the Daily Mail. "All the content will be there, and then people will have to get through it in different ways. We'll see how it plays out. It's an experiment. We'll see if it gets much success. For creators, it's new territory."

It's unclear at present whether Netflix is planning on making brand new shows to test out the interactive technology, or whether it will use the tool to enhance its existing favourites, handing a measure of control back to the fans. The most likely answer, as the quote above suggests, is that it's currently all up in the air. But if the gimmick takes off, the possibilities could be endless.

And Steven Soderbergh's mysterious Mosaic, a HBO movie starring Sharon Stone and said to feature multiple narratives and audience participation, is also reportedly set to be released this year.

Comic books, in fact, have been experimenting with multiple/alternate universes for years. Ever wondered what would have happened if Gwen Stacey instead of Peter Parker were bitten by that fateful arachnid? Since 2015, Marvel has been bringing out regular "Spider-Gwen" comics, set on an alternative Earth and exploring the possibility to the full.

Their invention dates back to the Sixties, and to an American lawyer named Edward Packard. Defying the usual lawyer-related stereotypes, Packard enjoyed creating new, inventive stories to amuse his children, and soon discovered that his listeners would be especially responsive if they were given a hand in the narratives.

Inspired by this, he created the very first Choose Your Own Adventure-style book: a tale called Sugarcane Island.

Publishers, however, were simply not interested: the experimental format was too unlike anything they had seen before...and it wasn't until 1975 that Packard's project would finally take off, all thanks to a small-time Vermont publisher named RA Montgomery.

“I Xeroxed 50 copies of Ed’s manuscript and took it to a reading teacher in Stowe [ in Vermont]," Montgomery recalled during a 1981 interview with the New York Times. “His kids – third grade through junior high – couldn’t get enough of it.”

He enlisted an agent named Amy Nerkower to help him pitch the series to bigger publishers, and in 1978 finally found a sympathetic ear (or eye) in Joëlle Delbourgo, a young assistant editor working at Bantam Books.

“I got really excited,” Delbourgo told Mental Floss years afterwards. “I said, ‘Amy, this is revolutionary.’ This is precomputer, remember. The idea of interactive fiction, choosing an ending, was fresh and novel. It tapped into something very fundamental.”

Thanks to Delbourgo's enthusiasm, Bantam agreed to pick up the series, and Choose Your Own Adventure went on to become a best-selling publishing franchise, popular with children across the world.

By 1998, more than 250 million books would have been sold.
As the demand increased, more authors joined the fold – including, eventually, Montgomery's sons Ramsey and Anson – and the author-publisher hit upon the idea of bringing a book out every month, and of numbering the series to make it something children could collect.
Creating the books was an ongoing, experimental process, and Montgomery, who died in 2014, would have been the first to admit that not all the titles were equally successful.
It remains to be seen whether or not the Netflix news will spark a serious resurgence of nostalgic interest in the concept, or whether the expansion of the idea into TV-world will simply prove a short-lived fad.
"Life throws you many curves. The choice you make might very well have a moral tone to it. Should you go in and save your friend in the ice fall now, or should you wait? Waiting may very well end up in his death, so if you choose to rush ahead, that’s a choice based on good morals, but in CYOA this doesn’t necessarily net a successful ending. This is accurate to the decisions you make in life.

"There's no way we could have programmed a moral ending for every storyline, unless every ending was happy-go-lucky and moral. Life isn't that way. Choose Your Own Adventure is not that way. Choose Your Own Adventure is a simulation that approximates, the choices that we face in our lives. Having trouble with your movie? Everyone gets stumped sometimes, the important thing is to not give up!

Ways to Brain Storm...

Watch some of your favorite scary movies. The point is to be creative, so don't just remake a movie. However, you can use some of the plot lines.

Watch some older scary movies. I know having to play by the rules can be tough, but there are some great movies made in black and white or early color that had to abide by the same rules. They can have great inspiration for alternatives for some of the more gory or bloody scenes you wanted to do.

Read or watch the news. Sometimes there can be strange or weird happenings in the news, UFO sightings, abduction stories, Big Foot sightings, etc. It could kick start a story line.

Read some scary short stories. Remember these:

Or just search "Scary Two Sentence Stories." As always, be careful what you select, as internet searches can be tricky and bring up unwanted websites.

5. Ask friends and family what creeps them out or scares them the most. Everyone is scared by something different. Sometimes, it's not the out right gore or monsters. Ask around and find out!

Or we’d watch on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Yahoo Originals or any online streaming service, really.
Recently it was reported that HarperCollins struck a deal with Insurrection Media to option and develop their books for TV or digital originals, you know, like Netflix shows. The first book that is being developed under this deal is a YA book because clearly the suits know what’s good. Mila 2.0 by Debra Driza is currently in the works to be made into a show and we’re down with that because that book is about a girl who doesn’t realize she’s an android!
In light of this news, we’re here to offer Hollywood (and our bosses upstairs) some other options from the HarperCollins bookshelf that would be epic TV shows.

1. Legacy of Kings by Eleanor Herman

Similar TV Shows: Game of Thrones, Rome, Outlander, Reign

What the YA world (and the rest of the world for that matter) needs is another Game of Thrones-type show to fill the inevitable void that plagues us after each season of the hit HBO show. There are a lot of YA fantasy books out there that could fill this role, but we think Legacy of Kings would actually be the closest and best option as a Game of Thrones replacement. This book is a re-imagining of Alexander the Great as a teenager and has a HUGE cast of characters and spans multiple different continents, has magic elements, tons of action and fight scenes and all the romance you could ask for. The best part is, we heard the rights to this book were already sold so now it just needs to happen. MAKE IT HAPPEN, PEOPLE.

2. Front Lines by Michael Grant

Similar TV Shows: The Man in the High Castle, Band of Brothers, Bletchley Circle

There hasn’t been an amazing show about World War 2 since Band of Brothers and The Pacific and we’re ready to change that. We can totally picture Front Lines by Michael Grant as a beautiful mini-series made for one of the fancier cable networks or Hulu. The book is re-imagining of WW2 is women could enlist and fight in the war and the plot follows three different girls and their journey to enlist, train and enter the war. And that’s just the first book. Front Lines is the first book in a series which means TV producers will have plenty of source material to work with, and it would certainly be a first for TV. And with all the popularity for Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle right now, I don’t see how Hollywood executives could turn down something like Front Lines!

3. Avalon by Mindee Arnett

Similar TV Shows: Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Cowboy Bebop

Remember when space operas used to dominate the airwaves with Star Trek and all of its spin offs and BSG and Firefly? Well, we propose Hollywood bring back the space opera. Why not? Star Wars is back in action, and we’re getting space-set movies every year lately with Gravity, Interstellar and The Martian, so why not bring that to the silver (or digital) screen? To the people with Decision Making Powers reading this, we urge you to read and then produce a show based on Avalon by Mindee Arnett. It’s just a two book series which means it’s already finished which means you don’t have to wait until the author
<del>George R.R. Martin</del>finishes the story. The book is about a group of teenage space pirates that is very reminiscent of Firefly and even Cowboy Bebop.

4. How to Love by Katie Cotugno

Similar TV Shows: The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Teen Mom, Jane the Virgin

You know how that Showtime show The Affair is told in a present and past and he-said, she-said format? What if there was a teen version of that show that was decidedly less depressing and was more hopeful? That show could be How to Love by Katie Cotugno! The book is about two teens who fall into a messy love and then one day the guy leaves the girl and doesn’t look back. Three years later, the girl now has a three year old daughter and out of the blue, the baby daddy shows back up and complications and mixed emotions ensue. A contemporary show like this would be golden on a network like Freeform, MTV or The CW but we could also see it working really well on a digital platform like Hulu!

5. The Brokenhearted by Amelia Kahaney

Similar TV Shows: Gotham, Daredevil, Supergirl, Arrow

This little, underrated gem of a book would be perfect for Hulu or Amazon Prime to rival Netflix’s Jessica Jones or Daredevil. The Brokenhearted by Amelia Kahaney is a teen novel that is basically the result if Batman and The Bionic Woman got busy and had a book baby. Set in the ruined fictional landscape of Bedlam, a Gotham-like city, this duology is about a girl named Anthem Fleet who ends up with a bionic heart in her chest, because of reasons, and now has these killer powers. Thanks to her mechanical heart, she can run faster, jump higher, fight better, all making her the best weapon Bedlam has against crime!

6. The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness

Similar TV Shows: I can’t think of any, but maybe you can in the comments below?

Do you remember watching Buffy and wondering why no one else in the high school ever seems to know about all the supernatural crap happening or ever actually gets involved except to die when the Big Bad blows up the school? So, what if you aren’t the Chosen One like Buffy or Katniss? The one who’s supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts, or whatever the heck this new thing is, with the blue lights and the death? That is exactly the story that Patrick Ness tells in The Rest of Us Just Live Here. So imagine a show about regular, normal teenagers who live in a world where all this crazy stuff is happening around them and they’re just like, trying to get through Monday, man. Wouldn’t that be a fun/funny show to watch? I know I’d watch it.

7. Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter

Similar TV Shows: iZombie, Once Upon a Time

Alice in Wonderland + Zombies = RATINGS GOLD. I don’t really have to say more, do I? Okay, fine, I will. Just imagine the ridiculous sets and costumes that would be on a TV show based on Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter! The book isn’t so much of a retelling of Alice in Wonderland as it is an homage to it, but I’m pretty sure TV execs could change some things around and make it a bit more of a straight retelling (you know, ’cause you gotta hook in those viewers!) And since there are four books in the series, show writers will have plenty of source material to work with! I hope you are paying attention to this blog post, Hulu!

8. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Similar TV Shows: The 100, Misfits

Well the good thing about the Shatter Me book series by Tahereh Mafi is that this has already been optioned for TV by ABC Signature Studios with Tahereh on board as a Consulting Producer. But until we actually see the show IRL, we’re going to list it here because we all know that when movie or TV rights are acquired for a book it’s wonderful news, but it doesn’t always mean that a show will actually happen. Dear ABC Signature Studios, here’s why you need to make this show happen: Go read chapter 62 in book 2, Unravel Me. *every YA book lover reading this is nodding their heads in unison to this*
Everyone loves a good mystery show, especially when you have absolutely no clue as to whodunit and every episode ends on a cliffhanger. The Outliers by Kimberly McCreight (she wrote that mega-bestseller Reconstructing Amelia) would be the perfect book to adapt for a teen version of True Detective or Twinpeaks. The Outliers is the first in a trilogy (the first book goes on sale in May) and it’s about a girl whose best friend goes missing and she must figure out where she is and who took her, but just when you think you’ve read something like this before, the story takes a VERY SHARP left turn and gets weirder and crazier. Please make this one into a show, Netflix!
The whole paranormal thing might not be all that popular in the YA book world right now, but with the success of shows like The Vampire Diaries (oh look, that’s based on a Harper book too!) and Supernatural, we believe a show based on the popular Die for Me series by Amy Plum would be a big hit. Set in the ultra gorgeous city of Paris, Die for Me introduces a new version of the undead with revenants, beings who are fated to sacrifice themselves over and over again to save others’ lives. When Kate falls for Vincent, a revenant, she must choose between a normal life—or the love of her life. A LOT of books! And most of the time I'm playing catch up, but this year I'm attempting to tackle my 2016 releases as soon as they're available. Here is my anticipated list in no particular order:

"This is Where it Ends" by Marieke Nijkamp

10:00 a.m.
The
principal of Opportunity, Alabama's high school finishes her speech,
welcoming the entire student body to a new semester and encouraging them
to excel and achieve.

10:02 a.m.
The students get up to leave the auditorium for their next class.

10:03
The auditorium doors won't open.

10:05
Someone starts shooting.

Told
over the span of 54 harrowing minutes from four different perspectives,
terror reigns as one student's calculated revenge turns into the
ultimate game of survival.

"Rebel of the Sands" (Rebel of the Sands #1)

by Alwyn Hamilton

She’s more gunpowder than girl—and the fate of the desert lies in her hands.
Mortals
rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mystical beasts still roam the
wild and barren wastes, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinni still
practice their magic. But there's nothing mystical or magical about
Dustwalk, the dead-end town that Amani can't wait to escape from.

Destined
to wind up "wed or dead," Amani’s counting on her sharpshooting skills
to get her out of Dustwalk. When she meets Jin, a mysterious and
devastatingly handsome foreigner, in a shooting contest, she figures
he’s the perfect escape route. But in all her years spent dreaming of
leaving home, she never imagined she'd gallop away on a mythical horse,
fleeing the murderous Sultan's army, with a fugitive who's wanted for
treason. And she'd never have predicted she'd fall in love with him...or
that he'd help her unlock the powerful truth of who she really is.

"Age of Myth" (The Legends of the First Empire #1)

Since time immemorial,
humans have worshipped the gods they call Fhrey, truly a race apart:
invincible in battle, masters of magic, and seemingly immortal. But when
a god falls to a human blade, the balance of power between men and
those they thought were gods changes forever. Now, only a few stand
between humankind and annihilation: Raithe, reluctant to embrace his
destiny as the God Killer, Suri, a young seer burdened by signs of
impending doom, and Persephone, who must overcome personal tragedy to
lead her people. The Age of Myth is over; the time of rebellion has
begun.

"Soldier" (Audian Forces #1)

Athena had a promising
future ahead of her at 17. A talent for dancing, a free ride to the best
performing arts school in the country, and a crew of friends as close
as family. Then she begins to see things that no one else can see.

During
an attack that leaves several people dead, Athena is saved by AB-12. An
elite military team from a city called Audens, a secret city, home to
hundreds of people who do not belong in this universe. And Athena is one
of them.

Charlie, a scientist, has finally found a place he
belongs in AB-12. Even though the team is the family he never had, life
in the field isn't easy. He can fight with the best of them, but he
isn't a soldier. With skills that make him invaluable, not just to the
military, but to the enemy, he can never escape the military life.

Rayne,
daughter of the most famous Generals of Audens, has lived there her
whole life, hiding her identity, even from her best friends, Willa and
Killian. Her dreams to become a General herself one day are dying,
despite her best efforts. She's used to life being tough, but always
being the tough girl doesn't mean she's always strong, and somehow she
always ends up alone.

Unfortunately for the three of them, they
may be the key to ending a war that's been continuing for centuries and
returning the Audian people to their home world.

"Riders" (Riders #1) by Veronica Rossi

from the accident that most definitely killed him, Gideon finds himself
with strange new powers and a bizarre cuff he can’t remove. His death
has brought to life his real destiny. He has become War, one of the
legendary four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Over the coming weeks,
he and the other horsemen—Conquest, Famine, and Death—are brought
together by a beautiful but frustratingly secretive girl to help save
humanity from an ancient evil on the emergence.

They fail.

Now—bound,
bloodied, and drugged—Gideon is interrogated by the authorities about
his role in a battle that has become an international incident. If he
stands any chance of saving his friends and the girl he’s fallen for—not
to mention all of humankind—he needs to convince the skeptical
government officials the world is in imminent danger.

But will anyone believe him?

Did I miss any? Tell me what book(s) you're looking forward to in 2016.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11876040373401629427noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204413514280413322.post-41694657442491366352016-01-01T05:30:00.000-08:002016-01-06T14:50:22.563-08:00New Year's Resolutions...Why?!I will be the first to admit that New Year's Resolutions are stupid. If you want to do something different in your life, just do it! No need to wait until the beginning of the year. However, while I was looking back at the books I have read in 2015, I found that I tend to read more contemporary authors and titles than anything else.

But why no classics?

Everyone always raves about the classics. Teachers. Parents. Colleges. Librarians. SAT's. Jeopardy... But what about Rick Riordan, Jay Asher, Marissa Meyer, Rick Yancey, Cassandra Clare, Sarah J. Maas, or John Green? Even S.E. Hinton or Sarah Dessen? These are the REAL problems for the REAL people of today. But, no one will let go of the idea of "the classics!"

However...

(This goes against all of my reasoning.)

...I resolve, in 2016, to replace 5 or 6 (depending on the polls) classics with, here's where you come in, a contemporary replacement.

WAIT I need your help! Post a book you love or dislike and see me try and replace it. If you want to just drop off a suggestion at the library desk, that's fine too. I'm talking books like "Hamlet" or "Scarlet Letter." There is no way that anyone can replace "The Diary of Anne Frank" or any other first hand events of history.

And keep a look out for my challenge updates.
